The ARSM Music Teaching Diploma program will provide music educators with the knowledge, skills, and experience to confidently teach music lessons and sessions. This flexible online program aims to develop student-centered teaching skills and grow each educator’s abilities to motivate, engage, and inspire their students.

Program Structure
The ARSM Diploma program consists of 3 units:
Unit 1A – Music Teaching in Practice
- Students will record a 30-minute video of themselves teaching a full music lesson or session.
- The video submission will be supported by lesson plans, contextual information, and a self-reflection.
- Focus is on demonstrating student-centered teaching strategies, musical communication skills, and reflective practice.
Unit 1B – Music Teaching in Context
- Students will complete short written tasks displaying their knowledge of wider issues in music education, professional responsibilities, and teaching approaches.
Unit 2 – Reflective Practice & Professional Values
- Students will have a 30-minute professional discussion with an examiner about their teaching experience, philosophy, and insights.
Course Delivery
- Live & Video lectures and readings on music teaching foundations

- 1-on-1 instructional coaching via live/video chat

Curriculum
The curriculum will cover core competencies in music teaching including:
Module 1: Introduction to Music Teaching & Learning (7 weeks)
- Why Music Education is important?

- Essentials competencies and skills for successful music teachers
Module 2: Curriculum, Planning, Instructions, and Assessments (7 weeks)
- Understand how curriculum affects daily teaching context
- Instructional methods (direct instruction, modeling, scaffolding, guiding discovery)
- Lesson planning frameworks
- Assessing learner progress and providing feedback
- Classroom management strategies
Module 3: Instrumental and Vocal Music Pedagogy
- Developing musical skills and understanding
- Music pedagogy for specific instruments/voice

Module 4: Instrumental/Vocal Music Education Lab 1: Teaching Principles and Priorities
